A phono preamplifier (also called a phono stage) is a dedicated separate preamplifier for your turntable. Why do you need a separate phono stage? A good phono stage offers dedicated amplification for your turntable signal, and as a result, better analog sound quality. A turntable demands more amplification than digital sources, and the phono cartridge on your turntable also influences amplification demand. For example, a moving coil (MC) phono cartridge has lower output than a moving-magnet (MM) type, so the MC needs even more amplification. A phono preamplifier has built-in settings to regulate the different amplification demands, and allows you to switch between them. A separate phono preamplifier also gives you the opportunity to match an analog source with analog sound from vacuum tubes, without having your digital inputs play through tubes (if you don't like tube sound for digital).
